FACELIFT
The elastic fibres of the skin lose their flexibility and elasticity with time therefore the skin becomes loose on the face and neck. The is the reason why you would like to have the surgical correction. Before the operation the surgeon will discuss with you the possibilities of the procedure. You need to be aware of the possible risks and consequences of the planned operation in order to be able to make your decision. This informative note should help you in the process of preparing for the discussion.
Face Lift At A Glance
- Facelift surgery helps to make the face appear younger.
- Results last approximately ten years.
- Recovery time is usually one week but activities can begin the day after surgery.
- Pain and discomfort are usually minimal.
- Additional procedures to supplement the facelift may be necessary for the best results.
What options does the facelift operation offer you?
During the operation only the skin or together with this the cellular tissues will be tightened. This way the strong wrinkles can also be reduced and the loosened cellular tissues can be lifted.
There are different facelift procedures:
□ Upper wrinkle correction, when the skin from the forehead, temples, eyebrows and nasal bone will be tightened.
□ Lower wrinkle correction, when the skin on the cheek and possibly on the neck will be tightened.
Depending on the characteristics of the skin deformation the above procedures can be applied together or separate.
What preparations are necessary?
Before the facelift operation the hair is washed and disinfected. Occasionally it is necessary to shave some small narrow lines at the places of the planned cuts.
How does the facelift operation go?
The facelift operation is taking place in local or in general anaesthesia.
The idea of face contouring is the separation of the tissues, their tightening and the removal of the excess skin. Depending on the surgical process it is only the skin or supplemented with the cellular tissues, sometimes muscle will also be separated from the neighbouring tissues. After the operation the lips of the wounds are closed with fine stitches or stitched on the scalp.
What to pay attention after the facelift operation?
● You will be wearing a head bandage for a few days.
● Please act according to the instructions given by the doctor. Before you are discharged from the clinic you will receive accurate information and guidance with regards to your behaviour.

What options does the facelift operation offer you?
During the operation only the skin or together with this the cellular tissues will be tightened (double layer wrinkle correction). This way the strong wrinkles can also be reduced and the loosened cellular tissues can be lifted.

□ Lower wrinkle correction the skin on the cheek and possibly on the neck will be tightened.

How does the facelift operation go?
The facelift operation is taking place in local anaesthesia and in sedation (supplementary soporific / tranquillizer is given), or in general anaesthesia. You will receive further information on the details and risks of procedure of anaesthesia.
Depending on the procedures different acusection is required:
□ Upper wrinkle correction:
An acusection from ear to ear in curve, in the hair or in the case of very high forehead in the line of the forehead and hair .
Normally not only the skin but also the forehead muscles are separated as well. Those forehead muscles that result in increased wrinkle formation (the so called fury wrinkles), will be separated or can be removed.
□ Lower wrinkle correction:
In this case the acusection begins by the hairline of the temple, then along the ear and earlobe and it goes on in the case of haired temple in the hairline or in the hair on the temple.
With this acusection the wrinkles can be lifted in several ways, they differ in the extension of the tissue separation.
□ Mini face lifting / skin tightening: only the skin is separated and tightened at the sides of the face / on the cheeks.
□ Wrinkle correction / full face lifting: the skin, and as second layer the cellular tissue will be separated on the full surface of the face and tightened.
□ Face- neck- and wrinkle correction / lifting: in the area of full face and neck the skin and as second layer the cellular tissue (which goes into the shallow neck muscles), will be separated and tightened.
If it is necessary a supplementary cut is made under the chin in order to remove the excess fat and / or complete corrections of the neck muscles.
What are the possible complications?
There is not any operation without risks!
Normally the operation is with minimal complications. Even in the case of the highest precaution some complications might occur during and after the surgery. Namely:
During the operation:
● Stronger bleeding, most of which can be reduced immediately;
●Damage on nerves: in the case of forehead wrinkle correction the damage of the facial nerve can lead to temporary or extremely rarely remaining paralysis of the forehead muscles. In this case frowning is only possible in one side.
A facial nerve damage in the case of lower wrinkle correction can lead to the paralysis of the relevant side of the face (corner of mouth), which is in most cases temporary. Remaining weakness / paralysis of facial nerve is extremely rare;
● In some small number of cases, if the surgery takes place in general anaesthesia, damage of nerves and soft parts due to pressure might happen due to the laying during the operation. These normally disappear in a few weeks without any action. Some cases the complaints (e.g. numbness) can remain. This is also true for the skin injuries due to disinfecting material and / or electricity, which may heal with scars during the healing period.
After the operation:
● Post-bleedings and haematoma, rarely but can occur even several days after the surgery. In this case there is a possibility that in order to reduce the bleeding or remove the haematoma a second surgery might be necessary;
● Very rarely infection of wound and delayed healing: purulence and fistula may occur.
● Rarely there is incompatibility reactions on anaesthetics and / or dissolving thread that was used under the skin. In this time the treatment time can be prolonged;
